Welcome to the Southwest Tyrone English
(SwTE) website. Here you'll find information on the traditional rural dialect of English spoken in the area south of Omagh in County Tyrone, particularly around the 'towns' of Dromore, Fintona and Seskinore. This little-known dialect developed as a result of contact between varieties of English, Scots and Irish (Gaelic), and it provides a unique insight into the origins and nature of English in Ireland. This website has been put together by Warren Maguire, Professor of English Language at the University of Edinburgh and a native speaker of SwTE. |
