Studies on tonal alignment in various languages have provided important findings on the phonetic realisation of melodic structure, and helped to deepen our understanding of the relationship between phonetics and phonology of tone and intonation in general. One of the main purposes of my project is to contribute to this line of enquiry, by using quantitative data of a non-European language (i.e. Tokyo Japanese). In this talk, I will present part of the results of my study, and discuss a preliminary finding which may suggest significance of the mora in tonal alignment in Tokyo Japanese.
