boy This map shows the distribution of words for boy in the cs. (the word does not occur in the dt. and the way in which the (c)wl. was collected means that pronunciations of the word 'boy' could be given even when it was not the usual word for this meaning). Other than 'boy', the only common words are 'lad' and 'laddie'. The 'other' category covers, from north to south, the terms 'loon', 'callant', 'chap', 'young 'un' and 'chap'. ● = boy, ● = lad, ■ = laddie, ● = other cs.
