This video is of one round played by one of the pairs in our experiment. It is actually a screen-capture video of our game replaying software that was built to allow us to watch the game after it had taken place. The slightly jerky nature of the video is a result of the screen-capture software; the game itself is smoother in appearance. All the colours are visible in this video, but in the experiment each participant can only see their own colours; the other player's box is all in grey. In particular, the following things are not visible to the participants:
- The control options at the bottom of the screen (buttons, timeline, tick boxes)
- The names of the two players
- The number of trials and the total number of successful scores; the current points-in-succession score and the highest points-in-succession score are the only statistics visible to the participants
The system the pair used was as follows:
- Default colour - red
- Left-right or up-down oscillations - blue
- Circles - green
- C-shape - yellow
In the video, after the 'run trial' button is clicked, player 1 moves immediately to a red quadrant; this is the default colour. At the same time player 2, who does not have a red quadrant, begins to circle around her box. This is the signal for green. Player 1 does not have a green quadrant, and so gives a different signal: up-down oscillations for blue. Player 2, however, does not have a blue quadrant, and so performs a C-shape, suggesting the one remaining colour, yellow. Player 1 sees this, and travels to her yellow quadrant, as does player 2. Both players finish their turn at almost the same time.

This word files lists the details of each pair's run.
Pairs A1-A12 played the standard form of the ECG; pairs B1-B12 played the adjusted form of the ECG in which the default colour strategy will not be successful.
The first set of pairs listed are those that built their system in the gradual way described by figure 3; the second set are those in which one player invented and used a complete system that was later recognised by the other player; and the third set are those pairs that failed to achieve any communication at all.
After the first column, which lists the pairs, the next three columns report, respectively, the number of trails played, the total number of points scored in all those trials, and the highest points in succession score for each pair. The next column reports the number of rounds until one member of the pair is observed to signal signalhood. This is defined as either any movement that is not direct travel to the final quadrant that is performed by one player in two successive rounds where the default colour is not available to that player (for pairs that have established a default colour; this is identical to the column mv, discussed below); or any unbroken repetitious movement that is performed in two successive rounds (for pairs that have not established a default colour). See the main text for more discussion.
For the first set of pairs the next six columns report the various landmarks in the creation of a system, both in terms of the number of rounds that had been played by that point, and the proportion of the total number of rounds played by the pair. The stages are as follows:
- def refers to the establishment of the default colour, which is defined as three successive choices of the same colour by both players;
- mv refers to any movement that is not direct travel to the final quadrant that is performed by one player in two successive rounds where the default colour is not available to that player;
- ntc refers to the first occasion on which the movement in question is performed and then followed by the other player choosing a colour that is not the default colour even though the default colour is available;
- 2nd refers to the first occasion on which the movement in question is performed and the two players choosing the same colour as each other, but not the default colour;
- 3rd refers to the first occasion on which a new movement, different to the one used for the second colour, is used by one of the players and is followed by both players choosing a different colour to the first two, and the same one as each other;
- and 4th to the same for the last remaining colour.
Where single lowercase letters are listed alongside these numbers, these refer to the relevant colour (r=red; b=blue; g=green; y=yellow).
For the second set of pairs the stages are fewer:
- imposed refers to three successive uses of the system that was self-reported by the players;
- and detected to five successive correct interpretations of that same system by the other player.
The next three columns list, respectively, the number of trials and proportion of the game that had elapsed before dialogue was achieved, the final system employed, and any additional relevant notes. In the column that reports the final system, the following abbreviations are used: ud=up-down oscillations; lr=left-right oscillations; os=either left-right or up-down oscillations; cl=circles; cr=circuitous route; C=C-shape; L=L-shape.
In all cases where the criterion for having reached a stage involves more than one round, the first of those relevant rounds is the one listed.
